Topic tags/keywords: u-haul rent truck move movers

As some of you know, I have been away at college for the past year doing a Wood Manufacturing/Cabinetmaking course. The course is coming to an end now and I need to figure out how to get the projects I have made home. The big question is call in movers or move it myself, I am going to get quotes for both but I am more looking at personal experiences that you may have had in similar situations. The only convenient way I could move it myself is by getting a U-Haul, they are the only rental company that I know of that has an age requirement of only 18, the rest are 21 and 25. The thing that makes me not want to go with U-Haul is the horror stories you hear about their customer service and their vehicles. At one point a few years ago it even made national news that their trucks were unsafe and some were even pulled off the road. And I just got off the phone with them after being on hold for 28 minutes… no great loss as I was on Lj’s the whole time haha. Should I head these early warning signs? Another option would be to go with another rental company and get someone else to drive it for me, my mother offered it as a last resort, she is capable of driving a 14’ cube van but doesn’t particularly want to. What are your thoughts on this situation?

I have used U Haul trucks several times with no problems. They have a lot of vehicles and some are good and some are bad. The key is to inspect the vehicle carefully for all the usual stuff and reject it if it is unworthy. If you do not feel qualified to do the inspection take it to a mechanic and pay him $25 for an inspection. Or, do you have any gear head friends that can look it over?

There should be more than one U Haul franchise in your area so you don’t have to do business with a loser.

Check out Penske. They are a GE company and pride themselves on good customer service.

Try renting a late model UHaul truck. I noticed that since that show on Market Place a few years back the quality of the trucks have increased. Joe had a good idea . . . if UHaul cannot provide an inspection slip have a mechanic do one for you.

Chris, my son, I have used UH several times with zero problems. I also rented their trucks for my daughters to drive from Stephenville to St. John’s when each one moved there to go to university. None of my kids had problems either.

Whatever you decide, good luck, and don’t forget that you can claim moving expenses on your income tax.
