I was shocked to read the news headline in today’s paper: Get ready To Pay The iTax! Surfing Facebook, Porn to cost more.
Yes, here in Canada, the Federal government will be requiring all ISPs to compile lists of all users’ web activity, and forward it to Revenue Canada, who will assess all ‘net surfers an annual ‘usage’ tax for all web activity. Adult sites, gambling, and social networking sites will be taxed at a higher rate. According to a spokesman, the government websites will remain free of charge. “Anyone who protests the tax can get their news directly from government websites free of charge instead” he said.
The rationale for this is that since people willingly pay a user fee for ATM transactions, people should not expect the Internet to be free forever. There is also a plan in the works to implement a tax on private use of satellite navigation systems such as Magellan and Garmin. Again, it was suggested by a spokesman that since some satellites are owned by the government, all users should expect to pay user fees, which could be as much as $1/mile if the proposal is finalized.
America will be next!! Don’t let this happen to you!! Write your Congressman!!
