My next project is a modification of the Harvey Ellis drop front desk which I plan to make using qtrsawn white oak. I’m learning that its not so easy to find qtr sawn. Does any one have a wood source they would recommend. I am in the NE corner of TN.

Thanks

How far Northeast in TN? A place in Kingsport carries it at reasonable prices. They advertise on the Tri-Cities Craigslist. They gave me about 75bf for the price of 50. It’s rough in places, but really nice grain and fleck. A lumber yard in Bristol has it too. Theirs is nicer, but more expensive.

Sunstealer73, thanks. I’m in Jonesborough TN so either is pretty close. What is the name of the place in Kingsport, it’s closer and if cheaper that’s always a plus.

I have it, but I am a good bit South of you in Perry, GA. Send me a message if you are interested. Scott Smith also has it. He is located near Raleigh, NC. Here is a link to his website. I believe that he will ship.

Here’s their ad on Craigslist:

They’re right off I-81 Exit 59. I’m actually getting ready to go get another trailer load from them soon.

Bannish Rickard is the place in Bristol.

Here’s the side of a cabinet that I resawed out of a gnarly looking piece of wood that they just threw in the last time I was there:

It ended up being the prettiest piece I got that day. The other side is bookmatched with this one. Everything in this cabinet was from them.

I don’t know if you’re near Blaine, TN (N. of Knoxville), but you may give MZ Enterprises a call – 865-640-6209. He may or may not have it. Good luck.

Danny, thanks for the info. Looks like you have quite an operation. A road trip might be in my future. I will check out Scott Smiths site as well. Again, I appreciate you.

Sunstealer73, thanks. The Bannish Rickard business was for sale some months ago. It’s a business I looked at to purchase when I heard the owners were wanting to sell ( age and health I understand). I travel a lot , right now I’m in China. So looking for established business to take me off the road and into retirement. Unfortunately the deal didn’t work. Not sure if they sold, closed or still running it.

I will try the one in Kingsport. That’s a beautiful cabinet!

The new desk is to replace a Sauder desk and complement the other furnishings in my recently remodeled study. And a great excuse to be in my shop.

Thanks again.

The last time I was at Bannish Rickard, back in the fall, their stock was getting low and I saw the for sale signs. The only 8/4 they had was Red Oak and Sapele. I hope they either stay in business or someone buys it and keeps it mostly the same. I’ve enjoyed dealing with them over the years.
