Made some beer caddies out of cedar from the big orange store. Give aways that I’ve sanded down to 220ish. Since these are quick and dirty freebies to give to some folks I went with “Texas Rustic” using simple joinery, glue, rusty cut nails, rusty bottle openers and a little bit of close enough is good enough.

What would you recommend using to finish this? I have on hand, spray shellac, spray poly in a couple of degrees of shiney, water based poly and some spray lacquer.

Thanks for any advice

Why is this not a Project Post, Don? I’d like to see them. That said, if your plan is to maintain rusticity, and keep splinters out of their users’ hands, WBP, as not-shiny as you can make it, I think, is the way to go. You so downplayed these things, and yet, you’re being fussy about the finish? Wait a minute. Back the boat up. Rusty bottle openers? Why put any finish on them at all? Rusty nails? WBP will probably cause streaking, over time, increasing the rusticity. Okay. That’s all I have to say.

I’ll be back shortly. I’ve gone out in search of myself. If you should see me before I get back, ask me to wait.

I will post it in projects but they ain’t done yet. I want to put a finish of some sort on them because beer bottles sweat. I haven’t drank a beer in 12 years and 249 days but purchased a 6 pack the other day to check the fit. I couldn’t believe how much they sweat sitting in the back seat of my truck. Couldn’t believe how much that stuff has gone up in price either!!!

I’ve never used the water based poly, and I wonder if the sweat (moisture) will affect it over time?

I think I’d get some oil based poly…

I use a lot of cedar and I finish it using , first a sanding sealer or lacquer, and that smooth, and then a spray finish from a rattle can of “clear finish” from Rustolium. This product is less than $4 per can and can be found at Lowes and Walmart.
