I want to upgrade my harbor freight dust collector into a 2 stage dust collector. Obviously the Oneida super dust deputy is top of the line, but is it necessary? Will one of the cheap trash can cyclone lids do the exact same thing as Oneida?

I have the Harbor Freight dust collector. I used a trash can lid separator and then got the Oneida super Dust Deputy. There is no comparison the Dust Deputy is a way better separator.

I can’t quantify how well it separates but in terms of cfm reduction, they were pretty close to the same and I tested each one side by side.

Interesting. So I think I might just do the trash can model, at least at first. Thanks

Do you have a dust collector to keep visible dust down in your shop, or to keep bad stuff out of your lungs? Another way to ask that is do you use a respirator mask with a P95 dust filter when you cut?

If health is a concern, you have to ask if any separator is a good idea, because the HF is pretty underpowered as it is, and separators lower CFM.

It is a convenience, no doubt about it. You will have to clean the filter less often, and it’s easier to empty chips.

But is that convenience worth the loss in suction?

I have the HF, I’ve upgraded the filter to a Wynn cannister, and I’ve decided not to add a separator.

If you haven’t yet upgraded the bag to a good canister filter, please do that first. Then decide what’s more important.

Of course if you are always wearing a P95 mask, the separator sounds like a great idea, and the SDD is going to do a better job of separating for roughly the same loss in CFM.

YMMV
