JPC, I haven’t found any that I am impressed with in terms of price or selection. My best results unfortunately have been through the internet. Recently though I found a guy that buys the excess from a local millwork shop and sells them out of his garage. He advertises on Craig’s list. His pricing is great, and he is nice to deal with – the downside is that his stock is pretty limited – only certain thickness, and limited on width. Right now he is selling some mahogany for just over a $1 a bd ft – though it is 1” x 2” x 14. His regular mahogany is $5 bd ft, though again the sizes are limited.

Barry is correct.

John, who lives in Portsmouth, about 8 miles? south of the MM bridge tunnel usually has a selection of:
Oak (red/white), Maple, Walnut, Cherry, Mahogany (mostly African), Poplar, Ash (small amount), Beech (small amount), IPE, Teak, Pine and one or two other strange ones I don’t recall the name right now.
He does get some thick and wide boards. Most of his is S4S, some still rough. Typically, 12/4 is the maximum thickness he gets and maybe 12-13”wide max., ranging from 6’-14’ in lengths.(I picked up a couple 9”x 12/4×14’ Mahogany pieces from him awhile back and have gotten several thousand BF from him over the past year or so.)

There was also a gentleman, Walt, that occasionally posts on CL that lives farther down in Portsmouth that has a woodmizer and piles of Oak, large dimensioned pine, some walnut, some poplar. I haven’t seen him listing anything recently. I think I still have his phone #.

There is a cabinet maker in Williamsburg, off Jolly Pond Rd. that listed a bunch of wood about a year ago. He has a woodmizer. He gets his lumber from local tree removal services. He did have a nice stash of Mahogany at the time. I picked up a few wide mahogany boards from him, (1) 27”x 5/4×14’, (2) 19”x 5/4×14’. He had these for close to 30 years, just waiting for the right project. I don’t know he still is selling.

So mostly for the “basic” variety of hardwoods, CL seems to have the best deals. But they rarely have any of the exotics from what I have seen in the past year. There was one guy by Fort Eustis Army Base that was listing Purpleheart. But that was a one time deal.

If you don’t mind a trip up to the Powhatan area, there is one guy that is listing Cherry and Walnut, rough cut.

PM me if you are interested and I will email you thier phone numbers, if I can still find them.

You might try Wurth Group in Norfolk. They sell just about any hardwood you might be looking for. I have purchased some Black Walnut and White Oak there, the prices seemed to be better than Yukon.

If you’re ever looking for Aussie Burls for turning, there is a guy in Chesapeake that is one of the 3 importers to the US. His name is Jim Syvertsen & his business is AustralianBurls.com
