As some of you probably already know I am restoring a Stanley type 4 no 7. A couple of weeks ago I gave it a citric acid bath and removed all rust. I plan on doing touch ups with pontypool asphaltum and while I wait for that to arrive I decided to move on to the tote and knob. Both are in decent condition, with the base of the knob having a chip and the top of the tote being knocked off. Both of these breaks happened long, long ago, and I was planning on either keeping them for character or grafting on some rosewood pieces. The only problem with the latter option is that these particular totes and knobs are Brazilian Rosewood, and I don’t want to substitute with Cocobolo. I have pictures below so that you all can take a look for yourselves and give input.

My first instinct is to leave them as is—they’re not that bad, and they’re actually in keeping with the less-is-more “restoration” approach.

But here’s another idea: Install new or used replacement knob & tote and keep the old ones so that the plane can be put back as it once was.
The downside to using the current ones is that, under heavy use, they may fail. The is especially true for the front knob.

You’ll notice a raised ring in the castings of later models Stanleys—this was done precisely to help prevent failure of the knob at the base.

Good advice as always, Johnny! Thanks for the info. I am not a woodturner nor am I great at making totes, do you know anyone who makes them?
