I’m searching for a special project for a special person – my wife. I’ve got about five weeks of lead time remaining and STILL haven’t come up with a decent idea. I’m not interested in armoires, trays, picture frames, cutting boards, or jewelry/keepsake boxes—I’m looking for something really different, and really special. We’ve been together for three decades. Any ideas? I’m not ready to push the panic button just yet, but I’m getting close….

Maybe a stupid suggestion – Make her a bee hive. If she has any interest in keeping bees, a hive would be a wonderful present. It is easy to build—(but buy the frames). I also would probably wait to get bees until next year. Have her take a class and read-read-read over the winter. Next spring you would be ready.

I have been keeping bees for about 5 years – live in an urban area and have one of my hives on the back deck. Making bee equipment is what got me started in woodworking. If this idea sounds like something she might like—ding me and I can send you links to plans for hive bottoms, boxes, and tops.

Search the internet for topics such as “wood art”, “artistic woodworking”, “wood wall decoration”, and such topics. I spend hours scanning this stuff and some will really blow you (her) away.

Have your say...
