Topic tags/keywords: lathe pen mandrel spindle taper turning

I have a Jet JWL-1221VS lathe, and I have been concerned about it for a while. It seems to me that is nosier than it should be, but I am not sure what is causing the noise. It also seems that sometimes I get some vibration when using a pen mandrel, but I am not sure if that is from the lathe or the mandrel.

Today I noticed a new wrinkle. When I removed a pen mandrel from the lathe, the spindle taper on the mandrel was pretty warm. I can’t recall ever before noticing the spindle taper on the mandrel getting warm. I had just completed running at max speed while applying a friction finish.

My question is, have you ever noticed the spindle taper on your pen mandrel heating up?

No! Have one MT2 universal mandrel from Packard Woodworks (PSI reseller) and MT2 A & B mandrel from Berea Hardwoods.

Do you notice pen your pen barrels out of round? Could be over tighten knurl nut or over tighten live center in tailstock.

You could have lathe bearings going bad, or hand wheel that is loose making noise.

Let us know what you find out.
