The variable speed stopped working. Is stuck on high. Any ideas on how to repair?

Thanks

Say more words. Does the knob turn? When did it start acting this way? Were you using it, or did you just turn it on one day and it came on full speed?

I’ve had the comet II for a little over a year with no problems. I was turning an 8” bowl with the speed at about 1/4 of the medium range when it went to full speed on it’s own. The knob turns but the motor doesn’t change speed. Changed the belt to the high range and it had no effect. I’m in contact with Nova and waiting to see what they say.

It sounds like something in the motor controller shorted—possibly due to a power surge or overheating. I looked all over the teknatool and novatoolsusa websites, but couldn’t find any replacement parts related to that. If it’s still covered by the warranty, I’d hope they’ll replace or repair it. If not, your best bet would be to find an electronics technician who can troubleshoot it. Shorted components aren’t hard to find, but sometimes locating replacements can be challenging.

I bought a used Comet II, the previous owner complained that it would shut down after several hours of turning. I haven’t had that problem but the first thing I did was remove the control box, open it, and clean it out. The thing was packed full of dust and wood chips. My point being that the vents are easily clogged and could lead to overheating. Might be too late for yours, if that was the problem, but you might try cleaning.

Just got word from Teknatool that they are replacing the motor and control assembly under warranty. I will check the control assembly when I replace it. If it is full of dust and wood chips, I will start a better cleaning routine after installing the new motor and controller.

Did you call or email? I emailed Teknatool and never heard back. Guess I need to call.

I emailed them off their website. Craig Walls worked with me.
