Topic tags/keywords: contest

I know I said I will never have another contest again, but it’s difficult to not. I have the prize chosen for the contest and it’s a real nice prize. I will tell you about it later. The problem is that I got a lot of negativity on the last contest. So if I can’t choose a contest that is fun and beneficial at the same time, then why don’t YOU choose the contest!! Throw out some ideas as to what kind of contest you’d like to participate in and I’ll choose to do it or choose not to depending on what ya’ll come up with. So go ahead, put your thinking caps on and lets get something going. Oh, lets keep this post nice, so no smarties coming up with offensive or irrational ideas. Someone will get offended. d;^)

Since you are brainstorming here is an idea….Why don’t you start something like this…...I would like to open a contest for all that read this….Within what is reasonable I would like to build a project based off LJs opinions and I will put to vote on any major project decisions and I will do what the majority of LJs want. Lets see the end result of a community project. What is the contest you ask? Simple….if you are cool to the builder, other LJs opinions you get to keep voting. Last one to keep voting wins the price.

Good idea Keith. Let’s stay away from projects because we have novice to professionals which is not fair. Go with ideas to make this LJ site better like it was one year back, this would help Martin and all LJs. Stick to less and clean jokes and help each other as much as we can. Be nice and honest on comments or don’t comment at all.

Here’s the problem – - As a woodworker I would like to be judged on the quality of my workmanship such as the quality of some complex joinery. However, that is difficult to judge from pictures on the internet. That forces you to have contests based more on creative/artistic design that you can judge reasonably well via internet pictures.

Here’s an idea – - I’ve competed in several 2×4 contest where the objective is to see who can make the most attractive and interesting item from a single 2×4. I suggest a variation on that theme. Specify that everyone must start with a single board of the wood of their choice that does not exceed X x Y x Z. Then challenge people to make a specific small item (e.g. a candle stick holder, a vase, a box, etc.) I would specify that no hardware would be allowed.

-- Rich, Cedar Rapids, IA - I'm a woodworker. I don't create beauty, I reveal it.

Most LJ’s can find uses for even the smallest scraps of wood, but how about the sawdust??? maybe a contest for the best project using sawdust. make it so that the project has to have a certain percentage(25-50%) of sawdust in it.

Rich and Duane you have good ideas but not all LJs have your experience and your tools, with your ideas lots of LJs will stay away from the contest.

How about a contest to see who can come up with the best non-offensive contest?

I’m still kind of new to LJ’s so I don’t know what kind of projects have been done in the past, but I was thinking of maybe a contest where we could make something like a tool box or something for the shop.
