it’s that time of year , spring break . REPORT CARD TIME ! i have been tutoring a new student this year , http://lumberjocks.com/nmkidd
or doug as i call him in class .
doug like all students , has potential . he also has allot of questions . some of them related to woodworking , some just to see if i’m listening . after working with him for about a year ( in class ) , in a very humble ( 12×14 ) work shed , with very cheap toy tools ( tools ‘r’ us ) , we have made a major break through , DOUG MADE SOMETHING ! a shelf dado jig for his router . a needle point holder for the wife , a box full of DADO’S , and some very spiffy scraps . recycled door workbenches and a deck ! recently , doug spent some of his allowance on some tool up-grades , a hitachi contractor table saw , a delta 13” planer , some oshun dado blades , a bench vice , and some clamps . now there is only room for 2 milk crates in our class , and working in there is really a stretch . so he is talking ’ new shop ’ ! i saw ’ grand central station ’ , he saw ’ Carnegie hall ’ , ( with the ’ rockets ’ and guest performers ) . after much thought , and checking his piggy bank , he decided to pour a cement floor in his carport , and have an 18’x18’ shop , with the old shop attached . so on to his grades :
pays attention in class – B+ , he looks at me now .
assimilation – A , i think he’s listening .
motor skills – A- , he doesn’t bump into the tools as much anymore .
cleanliness – A , there is only 1 corner left to clean in the shop .
learning skills – A+ , in this area , doug excels , he relentlessly surfs the internet and harbor freight for tool discounts , and cheaper deals , calls at all hours to share with me his adventures , and asks endless questions about projects on LJ’s .
shares his twinkies – D , i have had 2 since i have known him , and i had to ask !
artistic vision – B+ , this is hard to gage at this time , but i feel that our ’ outward bound ’ approach , will open many doors for him , and for his age there is still hope .
over all , doug is progressing nicely , and i feel that in 30 to 40 years he will be ready for the work force ! keep your eyes on this rising star , he is ’ going places ’ . i enjoy our time together , and the wonderful food he cooks to bribe me with . all in all , a welcome addition to this nut house we lovingly call ’ LUMBERJOCKS ’ .

Thank you Patron. You are such a doll. A very patient doll.
I taught for 4 years in my younger days, and the best part was reading the Instructor Critiques written by the students. I am sure you would enjoy reading yours too.
You are All Heart Sir, Steve

I was not as lucky to have a teacher like you David. Actually I had no teacher at all, and it shows! Doug is a lucky man to have the guidance of such a skilled person as yourself. Maybe I’m overly optimistic, but I think Doug will be ready for the work force much sooner than you think. So remember to treat him kindly as you might be working for him one day and he will then be writing your annual reviews! BTW Twinkies are bad for you. That’s probably why Doug doesn’t readily offer them up.

Funny to mention Twinkies. I have never had one. Growing up, everything pastry-wise was homemade, and ‘store bought’ was too expensive. I mentioned this to my kids many years ago. They could not believe it, they had never met anyone who had not eaten a Twinkie, so they gave me one at Christmas. I never ate it, as they always seemed…. kind of disgusting. I put it in a drawer, and just now pulled it out. Expire date on the package is JAN 01, so I guess it is over 10 years old. You are more than welcome to it.

Steve

I’m glad to see you are taking it easy on the impressionable young “kidd”, David. Maybe, if we are lucky, he will grow up to be just like his teacher one day. :-)

Being a teacher myself many years ago, I know what a pleasure it is to have an excellent student. Especially one that can cook. To keep him focussed you might want to put a sign next to the clock in your shop that I had when I was teaching. “TIME IS PASSING-ARE YOU?” You are a good man David and he is being taught by one of the best craftsman I know. I to have taken a grasshopper under my wing as well. These kids can be trying at times!
God Bless tom

Wow….....I managed a 3.2 grade point average….......maybe he was grading on a curve…...or his glasses need to be upgraded! ...........The perception I have of self is a high D or low C…......cause I’m old….slow….....and really don’t see a whole lot of progress….........spend more time building scrap then good items…....but as with anything….....you learn from the mistakes made.
Ellen – Tom – Charlie…....the only thing I am young in…..is the world of woodworking!!......truth be known…....I’m probably older then all of you…..64…......but who says a grasshopper has to be a youngster?
Steve…....twinkies are never too old to consume (unless they’re green and fuzzy).........yours would make good dunkers!
David…...sorry about the twinkie thing….....but even if i hide them…...my 2 teenage garbage guts can sniff them out like a bloodhound….....even I don’t get any!!! Also….ballet slippers hurt my feet!
All kidding aside…......David was tutoring me before I joined LJs….......he was instrumental in my joining Ljs …..... and for this I am grateful. I have gained an enormous amount of knowledge from Patron (and from all the Jocks here).......skills and tricks that would probably take a lifetime to learn without his help and guidance. Because of him…...I am making and can see progress in all I attempt….can’t ask for more than that!!!
Thanks for the vote of confidence David and…...I promise to bring my grade point average up!!!!
As most of you have stated here and other blogs…....I am indeed fortunate to have a mentor like Patron and within a 30 minute drive too!!!
As my daughter would say ‘that’s my bestest friend over there’..........not only is David my Brother….but I consider him to be my bestest friend!!!
Thanks David
BTW…..as Steve suggested…....maybe I should critique Professor Patron!!!!
-- Doug, New Mexico.......the only stupid question is one that is never asked!........don't fix it, if it ain't broke!

Just a great story, all around.
Doug: may you continue to learn from David—a man who—like Mike—has already taught ME a great deal.
David: bless you for your kind and generous spirit. Knowledge is best when it’s shared.
As are Twinkies ;-)
And may you learn from your student as he learns from you.

I bet that Twinkies of Steves is still soft and fresh.
David A great job in you sharing of your time. But maybe you need to bring him over to your shop and show him the vacuum and see if he can get an A- on that trip.
Wish a bunch of LJ’ers were closer.
I just left our Mason Dixon Woodworkers. we had LJ Lew lead the workshop on his Celtic Knot Rolling Pins. We had a great time. About 12 people attended.
