Topic tags/keywords: router plunge dewalt porter cable 894 play fall

Big bummer – I let the router and plunge base fall from my workbench onto the floor. Now the plunge base has a little play (side to side) in it when I release the thumb switch to plunge. I don’t think it had that play before.

So I’m wondering – can I get a new plunge base – without play – or is there anything else the motor would fit – like maybe a DeWalt base? Pros/cons/thoughts…?

Thanks in advance!

Big bummer indeed…the base is heavy cast aluminum I think. The motor is the standard PC 690. Did you try to uninstall the base and reinstall it? If that doesn’t work then I’ll only offer that there is a lot of “stuff” on that plunge base that extends above the motor housing (I always let it shut down, retract the motor and let it sit on the base). The biggest part is the threaded rod…probably the most likely part to take a “hit” on a tumble. I’d check that first after you uninstall/reinstall the base.

Thanks, guys. It seems (from Amazon reviews ) that PC reengineered the base to improve the plunge functions (eliminate/reduce wobble and sticking) and is supposed to be an improved accessory. Now I don’t feel as bad – and it may have always been weak…I mostly used it in a router table with the fixed base.

Cheers!

The new (and redesigned) plunge base arrived and when I fitted the motor into the new plunge housing – it fit like a glove, with no wiggle room. Awesome!

PLUS, the new base has better dust collection access (at the top of the router). And the unit is better balanced and plunges MUCH more smoothly – no binding or hesitation. What an upgrade.

Thanks JerryMiner for the link to the improved plunge base. Whew !
