I’m making a new carbide tool for the lathe. Found this branch that I marked 01/01/15, but for the life of me I dont remember what the heck it is. So here’s today’s guessing game. First I’ll show you the pieces I cut from the ends, then I’ll give you a sneak peek of the handle I turned, so you can see how white the wood is.

This already has my BLO mixture on it, but really didn’t darken it up much at all. It’s still a very light wood. Any chance it might be cherry? The next door neighbor cut one down and let me take a bunch of it.

I can’t say for sure Joe, not an expert at all but I have a few cherry logs stored out back and the bark on mine is a lot rougher looking than the bark I see on your logs. The last picture is a little blurred to me but if I was a betting man I would guess Maple. I’m making a new handle right now with Purple heart, at least that is easy to identify.

Folks here locally call tupelo “Black gum” and I do have some of that but the bark looks a bit different.

How about Dogwood (Cornus florida)?

- MisterBill

Hmmmm, I did cut back a dogwood tree in the yard, but I dont think I would have done it in January.

..............

China berry and Hickory… never had any of that (that I am aware of)

............

And crowie, I’ve had that thing for probably 20+ years. Have no idea where I got it, but I use it pretty much every time I’m in the shop. I’ll look tomorrow to see if it has any brand on it.

I Googled the center finding rule. Its available on Amazon, fairly inexpensive. It lists as Lance Center Finding Ruler 18”.
