I’m almost embarrassed to ask this question seeing how many posts there are covering this topic. However, some of the posts are quite old so I thought it would be worth it to give it a go. I am days away from pulling the trigger on a bandsaw purchase. It’s down to two choices. Either the Laguna LT16HD or the Felder FB 510. I’m leaning towards the Felder mainly because it has a significant increase in throat depth. Resaw capacity is fine on both saws for my needs. Price is a bit higher for the Laguna but the Felder doesn’t come with ceramic guides, which I want. So after upgrade its a wash. The only thing that holds be back a bit on the Felder is some reports I read on excessive noise and vibration issues when using wide blades. 1” resale king for example. This is a huge purchase for me and I want to make the best decision I can. I just ordered a Hammer A31 so let’s just say some serious cash outlay the past week. I want the best quality, fit and finish saw I can get at this price point. Any help is appreciated.

Since I have no Felder or Hammer machines I am of no help regarding their bandsaw products. I have a Laguna shaper and it is a nice machine. But then that is not their bandsaw. I suppose you have read the 16” Laguna Bandsaw reviews on this site. Like you said these are dated.

Felder claims their bandsaw can handle a 1-1/8” wide blade. I would think that there would be little additional vibration based on the 1” blade compared to narrower blades. It would seem to me that either the blade used by the reviewer(s) you read is worn or defective or there is a problem with the Felder design and/or workmanship. It would be interesting to hear directly from a Felder representative on this issue. What they say and how they say it could perhaps inform your decision. Also, if you can wait, setting up and using the A31 could also provide some insight regarding Felder Group design and workmanship and maybe even concerning their customer service.

Hello JJ, I also have no first hand knowledge of the Felder/Hammer products, so I can’t offer anything in that area. I do however own a Laguna 16LT and can attest to it’s performance. It came with a Leeson 3hp motor and does perform very well. What I was thinking was this, perhaps there is someone in your area that owns a Laguna and they would be willing to let you see it in action and give their insight on the machine. When putting out a substantial amount of money for a machine it is always better to see it in person first. Have fun make some dust.

Have your say...
