Does anyone, especially in Massachusetts or Rhode Island, know where I can find an inexpensive wood lathe?

My son, who is young but very interested in building, wants to try to make some pens. I figure this is just the type of Norman Rockwell type job which we will remember fondly for years to come. However, I don’t want to spend a lot on something that might be short lived.

Does anyone have any comments about the drill powered lathes, like the one offered in Grizzly?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I see inexpensive ones on craigslist all the time. I am not sure how little you want to spend, but it is worth looking.

Hi Kevin,
I completely agree with Wayne. Check out CL regularly and the right machine will find you. I bought 2 lathe’s on CL in the past few years in New England. One was in southern CT and the other in NH. I live in CT and look at CL tools a few times each week. I’m really not in the market for anything, but I keep looking. You’ll be able to get a pretty good machine for a good price. I’ve bought a big General and a Jet Mini-lathe. I don’t remember the prices, but I felt like they were good deals. When I do my searches I go though the 5 CT areas, RI, the several Mass areas, and ocassionally into VT, NH, NY, and Maine. For the right machine and the right price I’m willing to drive a few hours. Good luck.
