As part of our house-cleaning at work, they were liquidating some old manufacturing stuff. There is a Reliant 3HP dust collector, along with two hoses (each approx. 30-40’ long) that I will be taking home. This will be an upgrade to my existing collection system, which is just a Shop Vac and a Dust Deputy. I will be running this on 220. I plan on using this for my TS (Bosch 4100), planer (DW734) , jointer (old Yates 8”) and bandsaw (Delta 14”).

Here’s a lousy picture of how the machine sits right now. They have it hooked up to a RAS and a 12/14” Rockwell TS (wish I could take that home, too, but the cost of a new motor or phase converter, plus new blades and the 1 1/8” arbor kills it for me). So, it currently has the two hoses, and the third intake is blocked off.

Replacing the bags is not in the financial picture right now. So, I’m looking for suggestions for other cheap upgrades. The collector has a 6” inlet, split to 3 4” ports. I’m thinking that I’ll need to pick up a couple blast gates. Also, a reducer for the TS (has a smaller port, sized for a shop vac) and the band saw (has an even smaller port)?

Any other suggestions?

Yeah, don’t be put off by those puny factory ports on your tools. Enlarge them in any way you can; even if you have to cut holes to do it. A DC just isn’t going to work very well on those tiny ports. A comment, if those are 30 micron bags (and ‘d bet they are) that DC will be little more than a dust pump…picking it up at the tools and then discharging the finest particles back into the room. If you can’t change them out at the moment, my suggestion would be to let it sit until you can (or put the unit outside).
