I’m pretty new to LJ but have been woodworking on and off sine I was in Grade School. I started working with a local non-profit called Mobile Loaves & Fishes which was started about 10 years ago to feed the homeless of Austin. It has expanded in many ways to try to get homeless back on their feet and off the streets. I decided that the best way I could help was with woodworking so I have started a program to teach them. I have been fortunate to have most of the tools we need either donated or on loan. The 2 things I need help with, right now, are:
1. Our first woodworker to get commisioned work needs the use of a lathe for a day or two in the next 2 weeks.
2. We have a “Project Day” scheduled for 3/20 where a handful of local woodworkers will be working with some volunteer youths to make small items to be sold at the local Farmer’s Market. I have plans and most supplies to build some bird houses, planters, wooden train whistles and outdoor plant hangers. Of course, any local LJ is welcome and what I could use is 26 2×4’s to make 2 child picnic tables and 10 2×8’s to make 2 “Box Hockey” games. I have left these for last because its harder to the 2×4’ and 2×8’s donated and they take up more space, I just think that they will be good fund raisers.

If you can help, PLEASE send me a message.

Thanks to all.

Our “First Woodworker” was able to get use of a lathe and went on to do more projects on a limited basis and it helped him supplement his income from another job that he got. I wasn’t able to generate enough interest and funds to have the Project Day so the idea never really came through. Thanks for your interest. Mobile Loaves & Fishes continues to do tremendous work in the Austin area for the homeless.

We were talking during one coffee break and I’d mentioned that if I won a large lottery I’d open a training school and get retired folks to show their specialty to interested individuals who couldn’t afford to go to a typical school, or perhaps they weren’t ‘school’ material. I was kind of thinking almost a drop in kind of environment, informal non-intimidating to reach folks who wanted to make changes in their lives. After the break I thought to myself would this still be do-able without having won a lottery…I’m still thinkin’ on that idea. It is unfortunate that your plan didn’t work at that time…I can see where a lot of ducks would have to fall in place for a success. I hope your next attempt is more successful!
