Topic tags/keywords: project of the week

After reading darryl’s forum post where he said he got one of his projects to be the photo of the week on another woodworking site (congratulations by the way) it got me thinking a bit about Lumberjocks. Would anyone else like to see a project of the week or month and at the end of it all have a project of the year and maybe some sort of prize to go along with it? Some weeks could even have a project theme, or it could be a bi-weekly thing. Anybody else like this idea? I know martin has a lot on his plate as it is but it’s just a thought for the future. Any feedback is always welcome.

It could be done, but the problem is that with so many different skill levels it would be one more thing that would separate the members. The highly skilled ones who win all the time and the rest who couldn’t even come close. I think that projects deserving recognition already get it from the other members via comments posted.

Don’t get me wrong. I think competition can be a good thing on occasion, but for me Lumberjocks is more about about a friendly sharing of projects and skills. I fear too much competition would spoil that. That’s just one person’s opinion. It will be interesting to see what others think.

i understand the thought of this..but i think mikes thinking is on track with how things need to be here on the site..its a friendly sharing type of thing…i wont say more..what mike said is how i feel…but its always good to give input…that’s the other good thing about this site…we have the ability to be a voice…...

I was thinking about the competition aspect and how people with not as much experience as others may get pushed to the way side with this sort of thing before I posted this topic. That is why I thought maybe a different theme from time to time may help mediate such a thing. I like Lj’s just the way it is, friendly, and I hope that never changes. Thanks for the input guys!

Maybe make it a random choice. That way all levels could be eligible. It wouldn’t necessarily be the greatest work, but LJs isn’t about great work, but great people. That could encourage people to better, because they might be featured.

KayBee, I like that idea, just a luck of the draw sort of thing.

I´m with Stefang
and let me see if I can explain it in english
I think L J wood bee deverstated to a small
site where only the best wood post and all
others will come ocasesionly and look at great
projects and then go back into the mancave
trying just to do those humble things that
they always do and not develop skills with
the same speed and progress as they do
now becourse L J has the abillity to help
people and show how things can be done
with different options
I know I´m gone if it turns aut to be a competion

Dennis, maybe my use of the word competition wasn’t the best choice. My vision of something like this is not to weed out the people with less experience in the woodworking trade but to showcase the work of Lj members. By having a theme week from time to time, such as projects for the shop, it could be the best idea rather than the best craftsman. There is no doubt that everyone here has their own unique set of skills, whether they have been woodworking for five days or 50 years.

I think your theme thing already is here on L J
just think of the last little competition where the name of the theme was ying and yang
I have never seen so many different solutions for the same goal
just a shame it laying so close to chrismastime
