Need help in figuring out if my con heart redwood pergola needs to be treated with water repellent, spending about 1600$ on lumber alone so i want to make sure it LAST AND LAST.

Redwood will do quite well without any treatment as long as you don’t have any long term immersion in water. People usually treat redwood to retain the color, and without treatment, it will eventually turn dark grey or even black. Treating it sets you up for ongoing maintenance since the treatment needs to be reapplied every year.

If you’re using any spray irrigation, try to keep it off of the redwood. The minerals in the water will give it a bleached look.

I’d at least seal the end grain with Pen-o-fin as I build it.
