Couldn’t sleep last night so I came on LJ’s for a little while and used the “Pulse” button for one of the first times. I noticed that a bunch of new people had signed up, and that a bunch of LJ’s had welcomed them already. Then I noticed it was always the same jocks who welcomed them. Getting interested, I noticed that all the welcome messages were the same.

Is there some kind of “automatic welcome” script of something these folks are using?? Just wondering.

Yeah, I know, kind of random.

No Kidding. Those jocks are all the same who usually comment on projects & blogs also

i think some have a notice to new members ,
and have a cut and paste welcome message ready .
you can get that rss stuf or lj toolbar to do different things .
i don’t know any of that stuff ,
one word at a time for me ,
and one clic also .

Chip, there is no welcoming script just a lot of pasting. I used to change mine every so often when new signees were few and far between. But with the rate that new members are signing up it would take forever to individualize the welcome posts.

As Scott says, there is no script. I’m a better greeter than woodworker, so I visit every new member. If that new member has been greeted by less than 6 jocks, I post my regular welcome and a bit of posting advice. Sometimes a new member will ask a specific question on their page and I’ll try to point them in the right direction. Some of the other regulars do the same.

There is no question that if I were doing more woodworking, I’d do less welcoming.
