My friend has a new hot tub with pinewood steps. He wants to keep them as natural as possible. Has no WW or finishing experience. I looked a General Finishes Exterior water based varnish. Would this do the trick?
The steps will be out in the open 24/7 in South Dakota.
What brush would be best?

I don’t know about the finish, but for steps around a hot tub or pool consider adding some of this additive to the finish to give it grip. We just used it on some steps and it is like sandpaper. I’ve read some people use sand as an additive.

The GF Exterior 450 gets high marks from those who use it (that does not include me), and should do very well. So would untinted paint, which I have used with great success. With either product I would simply use a good quality synthetic bristle brush. Just be aware that any clear outdoor finish will need maintenance over time. What you are trying to do is extend that time period as much as possible.

Olympic deck stain holds up well outdoors. Be sure he does all sides of the steps to seal them from moisture the best he can.
