I recently moved to Tampa Bay area and I am looking for saw mills to buy rough sawn lumber from. I checked out two places here, Craftsmen Supply and Inter City Lumber, but overall their prices looked pretty high to me. For example, rough sawn walnut is $9 per BF which I think is pretty steep compared to the prices I was more accustomed with in the Mid West.

Does anyone know of more economical lumber places in the area?

Thanks!

You might want to give a call to Infinity Tools in Oldsmar. They will lead you in the right direction. You can look up their phone number on the web.

You could also check with Weis Hardwoods in Clearwater. They closed, but reopened a while back. Check craigslist often and you will find deals and dealers. If you do call Infinity, ask for Andy. He is very helpful and an allaround great guy.

I would check Craigslist. You might find some good ole boys with a sawmill but often times its mainly pine, cedar and cypress. My experience is cherry is hit or miss in Florida.

Most of what you’ll find are wholesale lumber dealers and they are pretty much S3S/S4S, not rough.

In my area (Jax) I’ve not been overwhelmed by their selection and/or quality.
Some of them won’t let you select lumber.

When I want quality hardwood I make a trip to NC or Charleston, SC.

Guys,

Thank you for your replies. I will contact Weis hardwoods and Infinity Tools. Will also make sure to check Craigslist.

BilltheDriver, where do you buy lumber? Your profile says you are in St. Pete?

Gleman & Sons in Sanford has a good variety of rough sawn lumber. I know it’s not in your area, but it’s an option if you ever come through CFL I recently discovered them and intend to buy more there as I use mine up unless Rockler/Woodcraft has a really good sale on some cut-offs.

I have a fair stock for a hobbyist that I have acquired from craigslist purchases over the past few years. BTW: Dale Neff, the president of the St Petersburg Woodworker’s Guild, just started working for Weiss. You might contact him if you wind up there. Infinity doesn’t sell wood, but is a great resource in the area and could maybe direct you.
