Im hoping some one could help me find wood. Im in North Central New Jersey and I am having a hard time finding wood stock for my projects. The Home stores (like Home DEpot or LOwes, even large lumber yards) do not have anything but common species of wood nor do they have thicknesses of 8/4, 12/4 or the like.. The only spots i have found are far away and add tremendous shipping fees to what i order. Does anyone know of a source within perhaps a 1 hour drive? I wouild appreciate all the help you can offer

Joseph, have you checked Craigslist? I just checked the material section and there are several recent entries for hardwood lumber or kiln dried lumber in the Northen New Jersey area. There also is a search option that lets you look at recent past postings. The posters may still have material available.

The wood selection at Lowe’s and Home Depot is limited and overpriced for what you are getting. You will pay around $6.00 a bf for maple and oak but I can get rough oak and maple for around $2.00 a bf.

Check with Other Woodworkers in the Area for their supply sources, If nothing else check with any manuafactures in the area, Tractor supply, Car Dealerships, Glass Munuafactures, for crates & or Pallets, Search behind Businesses, look for Trash/Stash Piles. You may not know what species it is, but who cares on free wood!
