Topic tags/keywords: jet band saw 14cs craigslist

I’m getting into woodworking and wanted to pick up a band saw to do small projects with my sons. I saw this deal on CL and although its more saw than I need; I’ve read here on lumberjocks that I should buy more than I need.

A Jet WBS – 14CS for 300$... Going to look at it tonight. My question is, other than asking to see it run to ensure its in working order, what else should I check to ensure the saw is in good shape?

Thanks – Eric

I’d buy it if it checked out. That’s pretty much as good as it gets around here (Gonzales).

Make sure it doesn’t have a ridiculous amount of vibration.

It had a riser block on it too! That means it has 12” of vertical cutting capacity instead of the usual 6” for a saw of that size. It’s a great size of saw, not so small that you’ll outgrow it so quick, but not more than you need for small projects.

If it runs smooth with minimal to no vibration, (little enough that you can balance a nickel on its side on the table with the saw running), if the wheels, pulleys, and shafts look in good shape with no play or wobble, if the tensioning assembly moves up and down smoothly, then I’d say $300 is a great price, pretty much as good as it gets! Jump on it quick before someone else does!

Mobile base also.

Seems like a great price if it is in decent condition.

Had to postpone until this weekend, now I’m worried it might not be there. Thanks for the tips.

Thats a real good deal. The riser block is the old blue color that Jet tools used to be way back. I put a riser block in my Jet and it was the white version so I painted it blue to match my saw.
23 years old and still going strong. Her’s a pic. I hope the pic doesn’t turn sideways, but it probably will. Sorry

Call them and let them know and keep in touch. I’ve had many people from New Orleans to Baton Rouge hold many large items like that for me just because I’d keep in touch every day or so to let the know what’s going on.

It is funny. I recently was selling a new looking benchtop saw with a nice stand, for really cheap and got about 5 inquiries.
There was one guy who begged me to hold the saw and kept in touch with me really well. He would call me 5 times a day for three days. He lived about 20 min from me and finally called me that he was on his way. In 2! hours he called again saying he was close to my house and … asking more questions about the saw !? In two more hours I got fed up and called the next guy in the line. This one came in 10 minutes. It took him about 5 seconds to check the saw and he was on his way. The “kept in touch person” never showed up.

Some people are just flakes. I’ve had it happen before. Luckily there was a waiting list.

Don’t worry, there’s always a better deal somewhere. Something will turn up, just keep your eyes open!

And usually the best deal comes right after you buy something.
