What the hell happened to the sole of my plane? I was using it without issue then looked at it today then this?! Is this normal or was there a staple or something in the wood? It chewed thru everything with ease. I’ve got naniwa 1, 5, 8, and 12k stones, as well as a dmt lapping plate, should I take the plane to those?

Just looks like normal scuffing. as long as the iron is not dinged that happens with normal use.

^ Ditto. If the sole feels smooth, I’d ignore the markings. It’s results on the wood that’s important, right?

+2 As long as it’s just scuffs and not gouging the metal, there’s nothing to worry about. If it’s scuffs, wax the sole and they’ll probably disappear.

I wish mine looked as fresh as that! You will always get scratching and marking on the surface that is being rubbed against wood, which can be fairly abrasive.

If you can’t feel it, it doesn’t matter. Wax ‘er up and get back at it!

You only notice scratches when the car is new.
