I am hopefully finishing up my first workbench build (ongoing blog on my progress here). That said, I am getting to the point where I need to pick out a front vise to mount. I have seen them range from $10 to $300 to more. I am not opposed to something like a Lee Valley quick release front vise ($300) though I don’t know that I need to spend that kind of money if there are perfectly suitable alternatives out there for lesser experienced woodworkers like myself. I know Rockler sells something for $100 though I’m a bit skeptical. Any recommendations (or products to definitely avoid) from the Lumberjack community?

Thanks!

I’m partial to a leg vise, myself. Cheap, only costs you $37.50 for a tail vise screw and some wood (2 pieces of ~1.5” thick laminated together as it needs to be beefy). Lots of holding power, greater depth of holding ability than a front vise, Can clamp even longer stuff if you clamp it next to the screw rather than directly over it, etc.

Not quick release, but I don’t find that to be a problem.

Not my photo, just one off google.

I have a Jorgensen front vise and Rockler end vise.

Pretty happy with both.

I keep an eye on craigslist. Lots of cool vises show up there at reasonable prices. Be sure to search for vice, vise, vices and vises. Record made good quick release vises. I’ve seen them for as little as $75 on my local CL.
