So, I’ve been working on a custom bed design for my wife and I, and I think I have it mostly worked out, and it’s time to get to work. I’ve got it done in sketchup – here- and I have a few questions.
1 – So the bed rails are solid 2×6, and in the model I have attached a 1×4 for the slats to rest on. Anyone have any idea what I should be using there? 2×4? 2×2? 1×3? etc. How much support do you need there? I’m hoping I can use something a bit narrower, so I can have a bit more of the mattress concealed by the bed rails. I’d originally planned 2×8’s, but the cost is already out of control and my wife is almost wishing we’d just gone out and bought one so it’d be done.
2 – I’m considering adding somthing to the headboard, between the bottom rail (visible above the mattress) and the very botom rail, so that you don’t see the wall where the mattress curves…. but I’m concerned that it’d be a waste of money and make the thing heavier for no reason. Anyone with experience/suggestions?
3 – The bed posts are being laminated together from 4 – 1×4’s which I’ll plane down to about 3×3 when i’m done. My question is, the laminated side (where you see four pieces) should face to the side, while the broad face of one board should face the foot of the bed, right?
Oh, and I’m doing it all with hand tools (plus a drill and jig saw)
Thanks everyone. You guys are inspiring… you’ve gotten me in over my head.
