Topic tags/keywords: chicago screws

Hello, I’m new to this forum and this is my first post for help.

I’m building a device, for the “relative” measurement of Chinese Fen in acupuncture, called an “ACI Locator”. In Chinese medicine Fen are used to help the acupuncturist to locate meridian points. I’ve included 2 photos below of a plastic version of this tool.

ACI Locator 01
ACI Locator 02

I’m sorry for the poor quality images but I can’t find much info on these tools

-I’ve cut the individual pieces out of Bamboo.
-The hardware must be solid brass, not plated.

What I’m looking for is the best hardware to use for the pivot points. I’ve considered Rivots and Chicago Screws but I feel like I’m just a bit ignorant of what is available. The thickness that the hardware will need to go through is approximately 3/16” total. Obviously the hardware must allow for this tool to open and close freely but not be sloppy.

Thanks for helping,

Grey Melon

How about “screw rivets”? here is a site http://www.bagfittings.com.hk/rivetspursefeet_02.htm to get you started.

Thanks for the info so far. I’ve been leaning towards the Chicago Screw/Sex Bolt/Binding Post route but I guess I’m just looking for verification. This is a very personal and important project for me.

Hello! I am very interested to see how this went for you and if you are in the market for making more. I would love to have a wooden/bamboo ACI Locator. I’m in acupuncture school, and the plastic ones just aren’t pretty or as good as the older versions. I’d so love to get one from you or if you know who else might be making them. Please keep me posted.

Hi Sten,

The finished product looked great in brass but was way too large. I was trying to make it as a surprise gift for my Acupuncturist at the time and could never get enough alone time with her plastic ACI Locator to take proper measurements so I guessed and was a bit off. We had a good laugh together though. I’m very interested in making a better looking and feeling version of these than what is currently out there.

If you contact me privately we can surely work something out. Acupuncture has changed my life so dramatically that I feel the need to give back somehow. My google+ profile is Quinn Hale, Facebook is Quinn C. MacKenzie Hale. I’ll look forward to speaking with you.

Here’s a photo of the finished product in Brass. Looked great but ridiculously large. She kept it though and I learned some things along the way.

The ACI Locator (Anatomical Chinese Inch Locator) is based on the cun system.

This article is based on a paper presented at the Fifth Australasian Acupuncture and
Chinese Herbal Medicine Conference held in Sydney in July 1999
http://www.sld.cu/galerias/pdf/sitios/mednat/el_cun.pdf

It may help.
