I am looking at 2 dust collectors but I am not sure which one I should pick. They are the following choices 279.95 395.95

The differrence is 120 dollars. If I have them shipped It will cost me 150 dollars with the band saw I am ordering. I figuring if I go pick them up I can spend the 150 on the higher end dust collector. If anyone has either model let me know how you like them or not.

For whatever it’s worth, you might also take a look at the Harbor Freight 2HP / 5 micron DC. There is a coupon in the current Wood Magazine to buy it for $139.99 (regular price is $249.99). I got mine last week and it works great! Eventually I will order the Wynn 35 cartridge filter to get it to less than 1 micron.

Good luck!

$120 for a cannister is money well spent IMHO. I upgrade my G1029 DC from the older 30 mic stock bags to nice 0.5 felt bags and noticed a nice improvement in airflow and filtration. Later I upgrade those bags to a JDS cannister and noticed another nice upgrade in airflow…filtration was about the same. I find the cannister easier to clean and the performance of the unit is better. The G0548Z also has better ducting between the blower and the separator unit…that should make a difference too. With the new 12-3/4” impeller, these units should really perform well.

You might want to take a pass on either of those Grizzlies, and take a trip down to Home Depot. They list the Delta 50-760 for $349.00 right now… I am no fan of bag filters, but the 50-760 can be retrofitted very nicely with a Wynn 35A when funds become available down the road…

I completely agree on the extra money on a canister is money well spent. I have the HF DC, fitted with the Wynn 35A, and the increase in airflow and filtration were stunning. It was like a completely different machine.

Not sure how much of a difference the new impeller in the Grizz makes, but the 50-760 a couple of years ago was the top flowing 1.5 – 2 HP single stage DC on the market… With the impeller housing dumping directly into the inlet ring, you don’t have any additional ducting or bends to cause restriction…

Go with the canister filter. I have the Jet 1100 cfm with a Dust Dog canister. The canister is more effecient than a bag, and easier to clean IMO.

Bert, I have the 2HP Grizzly w/o the canister. I bought it before the canisters were available. It has been a very good dust collector. However, if I was doing it again today, I wouldn’t hesitate buying the one with the canister. The extra money is money well spent. pkennedy

No question about it – Get the canister model.

It is so much better for your lungs. I started out with a cloth bag and added the canister filter. WOW! What a difference!

They cost more but are worth every penny.

Thanks everyone: I will have to see if everything will fit into the caravan with the rear seats out so I can pick the stuff up. It is about a 1 3/4 ride one way for me

Viking….thanks for the tip…I got mine from Harbor Freight this afternoon. I’ll let all know how it works once I get it put together.

I have the Grizzly you are looking at with the bag and Jet with the cannister. I much prefer the cannister for ease of cleaning and efficiency. The bag allows some escaping of dust, the cannister does not.

I was looking at upgrading my DC and came across the Harbor Freight 2HP / 5 micron DC. I havent receive my new Wood magagzine yet but I am told it has that coupon mentioned in a previous post. I have a 12×20 shope and am curious how loud this thing would be. I have downloaded the manual and no db rating listed. You guys that have one, is it bareable?

Mine HF DC is very quiet. Don’t have a dB meter but, I am verry happy with it. It is quieter than the Delta 1HP it is replacing.

I hooked 30 gallon trash can with the Woodcraft trash can cyclone lid before the HD DC and cleaned up entire shop. At the end of the job there was nothing in the collector bag on the DC. Pre-separators do work.

You should have received your Wood Magazine over 2 weeks ago?

Good luck!

Hey Viking,
I stopped by HF this morning and noticed they had this DC on sale for $179.99, last weekend it was $250.00. My plan is to purchase one of these probably this weekend but I was really concerned about the noise. I currently have a craftsman shop vac that has done ok however I just built a Thien separator that works great I matt add with a 55gal plastic barrel. I am like you the separator is the way to go but obviously you get a drop in suction hence my looking for a more powerful DC. Not to mention I crenge everytime I have to fire the craftsman up, it is deafening! I am dissappointed I havent received my Wood magazine yet, I am expecting it any day now. The HF will be mine once I get the magazine with the coupon. Thanks for the response.

You will be happy with it and I could not notice any significant reduction in performance adding the 1st stage trash can separator.

The Wood Magazine is March 2010, Issue 196 and coupon is on page 27. They will scan your coupon, at register, if you don’t want to cut up your magazine.

Good Luck!
