I am curious if there is and good substitute for 1/2 inch MDO? It is to be used on an indoor bench cabinet. Is there any other alternative that might be a little cheaper and easier to find? Seems to me a good quality birch plywood would work, just would not have quite the smooth finish and would be lighter in color. Maybe a little lighter weight with the birch as well. Cost is probably about the same. MDF would probably not work as I would like to have the screw capabilty that MDO and plywood offer. Any input?

Greetings descout:....I see no reason why the MDO won’t work for your need. As you know, MDO is plywood with paper on both sides. I use it a lot. Not sure what you mean by a bench cabinet. Are you talking about a cabinet that will sit on a bench? If so, yes it will work for any cabinet, but to me personally, I think 1/2” is a little thin for a cabinet (of course I like 3/4” myself), but it will work. MDF would be cheaper, of course, and work ok. Hey… it’s your cabinet…. make it any way you want to with the materials you have on hand…..later.

It is just a cabinet that is built under a bench. 1/2 inch should work since it has a solid hardwood frame. Where have you found the MDO? I have called local lumber yards and it seems no one carries the stuff.

I have seen MDO at Menard’s. As far as the bench goes I think the birch ply would work good. I would probably go with the 3/4” ply or MDO.
