A friend of mine is giving me a hand plane, and I’ve never heard of the brand before. Has anyone seen one of these before and can offer any information on it? -- San Diego, CA |

It turns out that this is actually a Mayes plane, not Maves. It is 14 inches long and he had the original box it came in. The label on the side is torn, but I can make out that it was made in Johnson City, Tenn. Outside of that I cannot find much else about it. Internet searches are coming up empty. I would like to learn the age of this plane, but I plan on cleaning this one up and using it. -- San Diego, CA |

It may be useable but you will prob have to temper your expectations of it. Plastic handles, stickers, cast aluminum and stamped parts are usually a sign of lower tiered planes. That being said. It’s possibly to make it a user but only so much can be achieved. -- Shooting down the walls of heartache. Bang bang. I am. The warrior. |

I took it apart this afternoon cleaned it up a bit flattened the sole and sharpened the iron… it’s now taking whisper thin shavings and I couldn’t be more pleased! -- San Diego, CA |
