Topic tags/keywords: question trick tip

All,
Last night I was thumbing througg my copy of the Woodwrights Shop last night. In reading about making dough bowls, one of the methods Roy Underhill suggests in drying green wood is to pack it in sawdust. he says it forces the wood to dry evenly. Has anyone tried this and how well did it work?

If it works, it may be useful since i seem to make alot of sawdust. (sometimes not on purpose.

Harold

Haven’t tried it, but if Roy says it, I’d believe it.

Fairly new, may not know the standards we keep here ;-)) I would suppose the purpose of drying in saw dust is to prevent checking since it was ablout bowl making.

I assume that would be after roughing it to a shape larger than your final dimension. That is the way bowls are done. Sealing the end grain might work, too. I agree: If Roy does it that way, it should work.

The whole reason for putting it in a pile of sawdust is to prevent it from drying too quickly, which you can also do by wrapping it up tightly in a paperbag, or so I have heard. Maybe I too should think for myself Jei?
