Topic tags/keywords: donate vets wood turning wood 501c3

Three years ago I started teaching vets how to turn pens with the pen kits I donated to them and with help from others giving pen kits also.

Early last year on of our LJs here came up with an idea to help get us out of my small (14×18) car garage which only allows me and one other person in there at a time or them and a family member.

The idea was to help raise funds to pay for a 501C3 which cost $2500 and then rent a building and them get wood working tools and wood working equipment I do not have or some of which I will not move to the rented building.

So that is how our GoFundMe account started and we are now up to $670 with several other wonderful LJs donated money to also.

I would really love to just get enough money in the next 6 months to pay for the 501C3 so everyone can use it as a tax deduction and then work on the rest of the money from there.

Not only do I need people to donate, but if everyone can tell others about how much we need your help and asking if they would donate also.

If you have a web site I would like to ask you if you could put a link to our GoFundMe on it to help also.

I am doing this for them and not me since I could work alone, but I do crave camaraderie that I no longer have and very, very few people who even visit besides those I teach.

When we are able to rent a building I plan on also having a snack bar with several tables. I do believe we greatly need this also so everyone can visit, drink coffee, play cards or whatever it takes to keep them from hiding in the house or bedroom.

I do know this happens because after I was hurt from the bombing in the Middle East and after the 1 year stay in the hospitals before going home that I did when I did get home.

It is not easy to have severe PTSD, Brain Trauma and severe depression and not trusting people or things I could not control. I know we need to get them out of this like my Mental Health Dr did for me by telling me a hobby would help my depression. I also found that teaching others helps also.

I do not know if you have ever seen someone with so severe depression, self loathing, feelings of worthlessness or the many other things that happen when something of great magnitude happens.
I have seen it many many times and after turning their first pen or pencil some of that disappears and with repeated time coming to talk or turn they start coming out of their shell.
It is not only Vets who have PTSD, but so many other regular people who have witnessed a tragic event and need to learn to deal with it also and that is where I come in since I do know how they feel.

Here is the link to our GoFundMe site

https://www.gofundme.com/m1abko#

I am in the middle and on my Right is a well known turner Lyle Jamieson who has stopped over 3 times and the guy on my Left is an older Korean vet who is now my local friend.

So can you please help. Again not only with just even a dollar but with telling as many people as you can about this. You can even use what I typed here to help.

Thank all of you so very much for both your friendship and help.

Arlin

Arlin,

Sounds like a darn good idea…

If you’re having this much trouble getting the Starting amount of $2500, how are you going to get enough MONTHLY to pay the rent, insurance, etc. etc.? You would not have any assurance that the donations would continue enough to pay for the monthly expenses.

I could not come close to donating enough to wipe the nose of gnat… LOL :)

... sure wish I could… BUT…

I will help in any other way I can… spreading the word, etc. etc.

Good LUCK… Sounds a really good thing to HELP the Vets as much as possible to have a better life! YES!

Thank you…

Great question Joe and glad you asked.

1. On the amount requested is planned for 6 months of rent, insurance, utilities, first aid kits and daily needed things like bathroom stuff and money set aside for other things that might come up.

2. I plan on selling all of my turnings and other turnings that everyone might do.
3. Open it up for local clubs who do not have a wood working shop to use it as their club meeting place for $100 per month and I know most of them around here pay that much and more. Also of some others wish to learn or do turning then it will be $.50 per hour and sell wood, pen kits and other things like that people will need to do wood turning and wood working. Some of the guys want to also have like a Community Arts & Crafts Center to do work with Clay, Painting, Photography and stuff like that and charge $.50 per hour also.

Of Course Vets and their family members will be free unless they wish to donate money to help.
Last one of the guys brought up how to do fund raising and I am sure we will do that too.

We also after this is running for several years and save money we want to open up another one in another State and have one in all States.

Also once we have the 501C3 we will be able to be part of United Way which almost all Military donate to every year and part of the business plan is to have all funds donated go only to operating the shop and tools, NOT for hiring a few guys to be there everyday to open and close and help or answer questions.
We will also have an incentive to those who work there that they can either work for free or at a reduced price with discounts of what we will sell.

We also agreed to open it up to Firefighters, Law Enforcement, and EMT people who also have high stress jobs and their family’s are affected by their jobs to.

I always figured I would protect everyone over seas, but the people above take care of our families while we are gone. :)

Very good, Arlin…

I got the impression that the $2500 was just to get the 501C3 status and Legal work, to set it up!

That looks much better! You should be able to make it work very well within 6 months!
... and get more funding on the way…

”Of Course Vets and their family members will be free unless they wish to donate money to help.”

Then how much will it cost them? :)

Put your humor hat on Joe, it was just a joke. The way it was worded looked like it was free unless they dona
oh nevermind, it was a feeble attempt. I forgot where I was.

Maybe someone would donate their services to set up the non profit?
Some local non profits may be able to help you find someone.

I think once you get that done, it will be very challenging to meet the monthly expenses.

Would the local VFA be of any help to you? Perhaps you could do the whole thing under their 501?

I checked with the VFW and they did not give me the time of day. They would let me rent a 20×20 space once a week and I could only keep some tools that at my expense if they get stolen. :(

It would be nice to have someone do that for us.

Roger

The greatest thing you can do to help is spread the word or if you know of anyone that has a website to see if they will put a link to our GoFundMe there.
I never want to take someone’s money that they can use it somewhere else better.

Thank you so much for thinking about us tho :)

OK Arlin…

I just gave you $5... almost twice what you asked for…

I hope it helps…

Good Luck!

I hope you get what it takes to put this into operation and to help as many Vets as you can!

A VERY GOOD purpose!
