OK, maybe this isn’t a gloat if we only brag when the price was exceptional. I’m more gloating at the quality of this piece of quilted maple found at a new Craigslist source. It cost $12/bf for this 9”x9’x6/4 piece which is a good price, but not a great price. Still, the whole piece of wood looks just like the section I’m showing. Previously, with a different project I posted (my liquor cabinet) someone asked what quilted maple looks rough. Well, this is it. It looks like it’s been planed some, but you are essentially looking for the figure to stand out as interlocking when it is planed.

Here’s some info that will curl your toes. This guy buys the logs from a local mill who alerts him if they find something with nice figure. If he doesn’t buy it? The wood is used for paper products. Could you imagine this piece of wood being used to make paper towels? I get sick thinking about it.

OBTW, as far as price goes, my wood supplier when I am there has a decorative/choice area, burled, birdseye, cats paw, ect, wood, maples, cherry, oak, quarter sawn, ect I look all the time, now this stuff is not priced the same as the regular species, but not a gouge either, but hey, when you see one, and like it, I buy it.

I am planning on resawing to about 1/2” for a cajon drum. That will take up about 3 BF. The rest is waiting for another project to come along.

AA?!? :) I hope not since I paid AAAA prices. I guess that’s all in the eye of the beholder. The project did come out nicely so I’m happy and still have half the board left over for another day.

That is some amazing looking wood grain. Is it any wonder the price tag is so high?

Quite right. In the first pic it wasn’t even planed. In my projects I have a figured liquor cabinet and some people had asked what wood like that looks like rough (so they could spot it). I thought I’d post the picture before I had done anything so people could see what to look for.
