I broke my saw setter last night. The handle just snapped. I got that one at a garage sale. So I thought I would go to a local store and pick one up. No one in Rockford IL knows what one is. I have been to all the big box stores (Did not think they would have it.) the two tool resale stores (usually have good luck there) And two antique dealers in town. I guess I will have to get one online. as I have never looked at different brands and styles before what would you suggest?

I have an old Stanley 42X. I’m from from being an expert in its use but I did a lot of research before buying one and it was the most recommended by those who know their business.

That is what I use to have. the steel Handel just snapped half way down the saw plate. I think it has a stress fracture from the years and possibly being dropped. surprised the snot out of me!

I just got a new catalog from Highland woodworking. They’ve got a couple of saw sets in there. Might be worth a look.

Know anybody that can weld? Could be fixed.

I have those Somax saw sets from Highland. Same ones are sold at other retailers and I think they are about the only new ones made currently. They work fine, but apparently the hammer (I think thats what the part that presses the saw tooth into the anvil is called) is not hardened steel so they wear out faster.

After getting the Somax set I’ve picked up a few more vintage ones, but no Stanley 42, so I haven’t put time into cleaning them up and getting them working.

Somax is ok.
