Anyone have a quick idea what the going board foot price is for spalted maple? I found someone locally on CL selling a couple of boards and the price seems a bit high. You can’t buy that stuff around here so there’s nothing I can really refernce for my concerns. Any help would be great.

Everything has to do with how you buy it and where you are.

A lot of it also depends on the spalting itself. Last time I picked up a couple hundred feet of soft maple from my guy, he had 40-50 board feet of spalted ambrosia maple he threw in for free, because they were 5’ boards, 8-10” wide, but the spalting was primarily only on half of each board and there were a few knots. I’m currently using it for a project where I only needed 32”x6” pieces, so it works. But, you’ll need to consider the size of the pieces you need versus what the person has.

If you don’t mind me asking, what Is “a bit high”, and what size/quantity are these boards? rough, S2S, S3S, etc?

He has two boards, rough, and asking:

2×9.5×8 – ~12 bf – $160
2.9.5×10.5 – ~16 bf – $210

Tell him to quit smoking crack, because he’s high if he thinks they’re worth that.

Well ya know it’s CL. You can ASK whatever you want. 99% of the sellers must be high!!

Saw someone post a piece of curly maple wanting like $25/bf. I emailed him and told him how much it’s sold for around here, “well so and so said don’t sell it for less”, well whoever told him that was an idiot.

My opinion isn’t worth much, since my spalted maple was free, but…

If I had a known need for it, I might go as high as $5 bdft, but not more. And, at that price, I’d probably just be insulting the seller, not that I’d much care. If these were super nice live-edge book-matched pieces, and I wanted them for a table top or something, I might go a few bucks more. But, this is just what I think it’d be worth to me. I typically pay under a buck for rough 6/4 maple/ash/cherry, so even this is too expensive for my tastes.

Personally, I think part of the price he is asking is because of the area. I’m in exteme southern Alabama and there is only ONE guy around here within 200 miles that sells any sort of hardwoods retail and I sort of found him by accident. Around here, if you want oak you have to go to the box stores and pay $45 for a 1×8x8. Oh, and you have your choice of oak, pine, or poplar.

You can make your own spalting, it’s a fungus found in soil.

It’s all about location and convenience. I try to hoard materials and avoid the convenience factor.

I’m guessing the first has to do with the second…

You could order it online, from a lot of options…pay shipping and still be beneath those prices.

Southern bama? Some good places in New Orleans if you feel like driving.

I actually drove to Ponchatoula to Acadian Cypress a few months back. It wasn’t too bad but they aren’t open on weekends so I have to take the day off, etc… Turns into a whole day activity.
