I need some advise on finishes. I am about to build a front entrance mahogony door with stained glass. I am replacing an existing new mahogony door. The door is coming apart and the outside of the door has faded bad and looks like the finish is no longer there.. My concern is the stain and finish. What type of stain and finish would be best to prevent fading and protect it from direct sunlight, rain and snow. would a laquer stain and finish be best for this application. Need help on this one.

Jeff, if I were doing a project like this I would put on a finish of spar varnish. We have pine exterior doors that were installed over twenty years ago when we built. I stained and finished them several coats of spar varnish and have had to re-do them one time in the ensuing period. I do have them behind storm doors but the ones on the front of house face west and get a pretty good beating from the afternoon sun.

Thank you for the advice Scott. I’m new to the exterior finishes. i’ve used a lot of indoor finishes on cabinets and furniture but not an exterior door.

Lacquer (as much as I like and use it) is worthless for exterior finishes.

So—-What Scott said!!
Don’t use cheap stuff either.
