Topic tags/keywords: chisel blade

The latest issue of Wood magazine has an article on chisels and they reference Traditional Woodworker (traditionalwoodworker.com) as a good source. I’m looking for a set of butt chisels and the ones they carry sound/look nice. Nice size, nice handles, Rc61 hardness and they are made in Germany. However, they don’t say who the manufacturer is except for saying they are a German company. Does anyone have any experience with their tools? How do they compare to chisels like 2-cherries, Crown, Phiel,..?

Any information would be helpful,
Thanks,
Jeff

if you refer to the set of 6 firmer chisels. they look very similar to my MHG set:

but not quite the same. there are slight differences.

the MHG is also german made, and the blades take a very nice edge. but requires occasional touch ups (honing) to keep it that way. they feel good in the hand, but slightly underweight on the handle, and blade heavy. all in all a good set, but $120 might be a bit on the higher scale… I’d look for them in the $80+ range.

the MHG are actually on sale here for $75:

Jeff, the blades and the rings look very very similar to the MHG set I have. although I cannot warrant this statement – but it looks like it’s coming from the same mfg. that being said – they are good chisels, but I feel they are a bit overpriced at $100. they do not have the heft of 2cherries and comparable chisels, but still a very good set.

all that really based on the MHG set that I have… which liked I said looks very similar, but I can’t be certain that they are the same.

Fine Woodworking, in their October ‘08 (issue #200) magazine, ran extensive tests on about two dozen chisels;
