Amazon has the Jet slow speed wet grinder on sale for $230. This grinder gets mixed reviews. Some say the added features make it better than the Tormek. Some say the stone doesn’t wear as well as the tormek, some say it doesn’t have the power of the tormek. Some of that very well could be Tormek elitism.

But anyhow, if you’ve been wanting a slow speed wet grinder, ala Tormek, but couldn’t justify the $400-$500 price tag this might be a fit.

This price puts it right in there with a Worksharp system but can sharpen pretty much anything, of pretty much any width, not just plane irons and chisels (and free hand gouges).

I wonder how many got sold since this post. Did you buy one yourself? What did you think of it…I should check the reviews…

One way to find out is to buy one and let us know what you think.

Mark,

I did not buy the Jet. Overwhelmingly the reviews and comments from users of both the Tormek and Jet systems gave high marks to the Tormek and low marks to the Jet. I ended up buying the Tormek and am very happy. Here’s a Tormek T7 review I did a while ago.

I bought the Jet a while back and have been pretty happy with it. It is not great for long kitchen knives (it does work) but for all my shop needs it seems to do a great job.

I have two tormeks small and large it’s along story but I started of with the small one and was offered a large one at a reasonable price worked out great .The tormek wheels are also soft I think I would jump at the jet for the moey what could possibly go wrong it’s a pretty good copy from what I hear and let’s be honest tormek are ripping people off with their prices for too long look at the jet acessories much cheaper unfortunitely I bought all of mine when the tormek was the olnly shown in town good thing to have competitiopn and good luck to anyone whop makes a saving.Alistair

I own a Jet sharpener and am very happy with the results, although I must admit I have not tried the Tormek so I have nothing to compare it to. My only gripe with the Jet is the turning tool sharpening instructions leave a lot to be desired, it would be nice if the Jet instructions were more comprehensive like the Tormek.

Surely the tormek instructions will be the same even if the fittings for sharpening jigs etc are a bit different you could ask for advice from the supplier. Anyway I still think Tormek is basically the same machine but much more expensive they have cornered the market for too long and done very well.I welcome another form of competition thet’s what we need to keep going incidently I have a large sixteen inch oil drenched wheel horizontal which gives superb sharpening results nice and cool slow runing fed by mechanical pump when the wheel turns the oil is brought up towards the large wheel. At the moment I use it for planing irons and chisels I need to make a few jigs for planer blades though I have a waterbased machine for them, actually I have a whole area plus dedicated to sharpening when I realised how importaNT this was Alistair

I inherited a SuperGrind 2000 and was wondering what the significant differences were between the earlier model and the T-7?

I have had a Tormek for several years and have never regretted purchasing it. Works great.

I bought a Jet about a year ago(for more money) and have been very happy with it. Sharp tools are wondeful.

Regards

Jerry
