Topic tags/keywords: question sharpening

I’ve heard that grit numbers don’t match up between water stones (maybe just the Japanese ones?) and sandpaper. Does anyone have some sort of conversion chart? I’ve been looking to buy an 8000-grit stone, but I’m not ready to make the investment for a good one yet so I thought I would delay with some sandpaper and glass. Any idea what this would be in sandpaper grit? Thanks.
