Anyone have experience bending wood with steam? Have read some articles about doing it but nothing works like experience. Is it possible to bend a 1”x14”x 5’ on a 18” radius on one end?
Wondering what pressure is involved?
Any thoughts appreciated
thanks,
bud

The most recent WOOD magazine has a nice article on steaming and there was another string on here about a month ago..I’ll see if I can find.

That looks to me like a pretty wide piece of wood. If you have a template, or form to bend over, I would think several clamps could do it without too much effort if you steamed it good…........... Jerry (in Tucson)

It will depend on the species you are bending but the real problem is that it will cup quite a lot at that width. By that I mean that the centre of the 14” will bend to your radius but the outer edges won’t.
When we bent wide Oak boards like this on the sterns of commercial fishing boats we bent pieces thicker than we needed by about 1/2” . We hollowed out the timbers that it would seat against and then planed off the protruding corners after it all cooled to get a flat surface.

What exactly are you trying to do?
