I have been debating a long time on which to get,,a collets set,,which normally 3/4 is the largest,,or a 3 jaw chuck which can expand wider than 3/4,,i would like to know anybodys thoughts on this and which do you prefer and what the reason is,,and what brand of each do you recommend,,,,thank you

Personal opinion … a 3-jaw chuck would be a waste of money. Stick with 4-jaw chucks and get yourself a set of pin jaws. Collet chucks are handy … I just used mine to knock out a half dozen lamp pulls.

3 jaw scroll chucks are used mostly for metal work – although can be used for wood as well. But as Gerry sez, a 4 jaw chuck is a better choice and more versatile.

I agree with the others, you want a four jaw WOOD chuck. A metal style has small gripping area where a wood style wraps around. Think of a batter, do you want your hands wrapped around the bat or hold it by your finger tips.
There are several good brands of chucks. I use Nova myself. For mini/midi lathes I suggest the Nova G3, for 14” swing or larger I suggest the Supernova2.

Agree with the others, 4 jaw wood chuck. I use PSI’s Barracuda chucks. They have different sizes, including micro for pen turning and the like. While not as spiffy as the more expensive chucks, they are a great value – they do the same thing for a lot less $’s. They come with 4 sets of chucks.
