https://lexington.craigslist.org/mat/5366539048.html

Found these “mantel” pieces tonight on cl, and was thinking about buying them. Was looking at them on my phone then when I saw them on my computer, saw some of the cracks better besides the big obvious one on the cherry, which has me changing my mind. Anyways, the 2 walnut ones are 7-8” wide 5” thick and 6’ long, were found in an old barn so technically dry but no clue of the actual mc. The cherry is 9-10” wide, 5.5” thick and 7’ long, cut 3 years ago. So roughly 70bf of wood for $100, not sure of the actual mc or how deep or many cracks there are, and an hour and a half drive one way. Worth it? Of course they are located in bfe, was hoping they’d be near one of the bigger cities I buy lumber at so I could go pick up other stuff to justify a trip.

I’m thinking it depends how much you want them. Once you have them, there is nothing saying you can’t use them for something else.

My main concern is the cracks, not being able to tell how many and how deep they are, being an hour and a half can’t just go check them out. Had thought about getting them and using them for future table legs or bowls, or actually make a mantel out of them, who knows. One problem is no telling how heavy they are and cutting them up would have to be don’t on my bandsaw with it’s 3/4hp motor and 6” clearance.

3 hour round trip, cracks look deep from here, and not really a gloat price. I would probably pass on these (but then I have a sawmill and could mill my own). End grain pics would be really helpful: if these are cut from the center of the log definitely PASS.

I think they’d be a good deal if they were near but you’re undervaluing your time alot if you get there and they aren’t worth it. If they are in good shape then it seems like a good deal (again not accounting for the proximity) but not a great deal. I’m betting that red Dodge in your avatar doesn’t exactly get economy car mileage either.

I ended up passing on it, he was busy today and I’ll be busy tomorrow. Wish I had a mill so I could cut my own stuff, would be in heaven haha. Haven’t updated my avatar, sold the dodge and have a different truck that gets even worse mileage, sure miss my dodge :( haha

He’s located in Bedford, which looked to be right between louisville and Cincinnati, hour and a half from Lexington which is where I’m located.
