I’m building a new door for my bathroom (Combination of hardwoods – Maples) and need advice on how and what to use for a finish. What would you recommend given the fact it will be exposed to high humidity from the shower? I know I’m probably missing some useful information but I appreciate any advice you have to share.

I think polyurethane would work just fine. I have poly on all of my bathroom doors inside and out and they have been in for 25 years and no problems.

I agree with Wayne. I put poly on any piece that will be exposed to high humidity or direct moisture contact. I put solid pine doors up over 20 years ago in our home (exterior doors and bathrooms included), stained them and topcoated with 3 coats of poly. They still look as good today as they did when first installed. I have had to re-do the exterior doors once since the sun does a number on them after a while.

Just make sure that you also seal the top and bottoms of the doors. Sometimes these are overlooked and the exposed areas lead to moisture problems.

I can’t add anything else …. just wanted to agree with Wayne and Scott especially about doing the top and bottoms. The moisture will wick up and eventually deteriorate the door if you don’t seal it completely.

Thanks for the help, guys. I’d like to say I would have “remembered” to do the tops and bottoms but…..

Have your say...
