Topic tags/keywords: mlcs complaints

I have shopped with MLCS for years and have always been happy with their products and service, but not any more.

Just before Christmas I decided I needed more 1/4 inch router bits and they had a sale on their large sets. In the add they listed free lube and collet extention with their 30, 45, and 66 bit sets, so I said “Bonus” and ordered the 45pc 1/4 in set. I received my order and only received the lube and assumed the collet was backordered and would arrive soon. Today i got tired of waiting and called them, they tell me that “only the 1/2 in sets that got the extension and it was clearly stated in the ad”, I pointed out that it didn’t specify only 1/2” in their add and if they add was read as they suggested then I shouldn’t have received the free lube with my 1/4” set, the way it was printed it looked like you got the items and could choose 1/4” or 1/2”. They then offered to sell me the 1/2” collet extension for 1/2 price plus shipping, I said so I pay 15 bucks more plus shipping and I get what I thought I was getting in the first place. Customer service is going downhill more everyday.

I realize that this is minor and a matter of samantics and advertising mumbo jumbo, but it pisses me off…

I would email the higher powers at MLCS and describe your experience as you did here. I have found that most companies, mine included, would prefer a happy customer…Sometimes it is the fault of the individual working in the CS area that causes the grief…either they get overly officious and quote the rules to you…or they have a bad day and take it out on the customer. When I used to receive letters (back a bit in time) from a customer that had similar experiences – I would overide the CS person and issue a refund or send them the promotion…...sometimes the CS employee does not have that option.

Really depends who you are dealing with. I sent an email into Lee Valley explaining that somehow i had bent the lever cap retention screw on my low angle block, and wanted to buy another. they didnt hesitate, didnt ask me how it was bent, just offered to send me a new one free, shipped it priority mail, got it 2 days later. Granted that probably only cost them 15$ but that was cheap to impress a customer.

Another example is here in town I used to work for Mikes Carwash. Mike’s had a great customer service outlook. I had some idiot going thru the wash who had mistakenly left his car in gear and accidentally hit the gas, ramming the car in front of him. It was obvious what had happened, couldnt have happened any other way, but my company didnt bat an eye, just offered to pay for both his front end and the back of the mini van. Result: Mike’s customers for life, probably their friends and family as well once they’ve told that story.

I’m really surpirised to see this about MLCS. I have always gotten great customer service from them. They sent no-charge, no questions-asked replacements for two bits (a straight bit and a slot cutter) that broke almost a year after I bought them.

The girl was very nice and even said that she agreed with me, but when she talked to the manager I got the company line that the ad was not the problem just MY interpretation. I even pointed out that by their reading of the ad I shouldn’t have recieved the lube either, but it didn’t work. Even if I had decided to pay for the collet extension that they offered it was on backordered.

Having said all of this I will still use MLCS but call in my order instead of online ordering.

Saw the ad. Decided I didn’t need the set of bits, but I understood it only applied to the 1/2” shank bits. Not that it was plain in the ad, just that I figured the extension would only work with the 1/2” shanks. I think the lube works with both sizes. :-))

Are the bits that you did receive a quality product? Where were they manufactured? You may have more to be irritated about than the fact you did not receive the collet extension.

PS I obviously am not reading the ad that is being discussed in this post. I see no offer for the collet extension and the free lub is offered for all three sets. Just curious, did you get the FREE Wooden Storage Box.

Got the box and the bits are good quality for my non-production shop. I’m over it now, I’ll just call whenever I order from them in the future.
