I recently acquired a No.97 Cabinet Makers plane in very good shape, only the beginnings of a chip in the front left corner. The odd thing is that it is stamped “DAMAGED” on the side of the plane body. I am wondering if this makes it completely undesirable to a collector or not. I am more into functionality than collectibility and only bought this on a whim. I can’t find much info about “damage” stamped planes. Any info would be appreciated.

I have a Stanley number 2 plane Marked “damaged”. About 30 years ago I had a Stanley 4 1/2 plane marked “damaged” also. A Discussion at a Midwest tool collector meet. The general consensus is that these items are World War I era tools. The war department bought all the good tools, so Stanley had to sell their 2nds to the general public to meet demand.

Wait, so your username just happens to be “Damaged” and this is your first post?

Just sayin’ ...

Anyway—I can’t currently find any “damaged” tools in my current collection, but I have several stamped “Imperfect”

that is a very cool plane

on the off chance that you’re not aware of this site, have a look HERE for some history/info (the #97 is about 3/4 of the way down the pg)
