Working on practicing two things before I take my novice handtool skills to a project that I intend to keep off the firewood pile. First I need to practice my sharpening skills. To do this you need a system and you need dull tools. My tools were oookkkk – not the best but they cut. So I decided that my second objective of the night was to cut some dados. That would certainly dull a knife or two since they were not all that sharp.

This is what I think. I fully understand the need for a knife wall when doing a dado. I know I start that wall with a knife’s edge. Then the chisel comes in a knicks off a small wedge into the wall making a crevice. I was taking two passes down the wall to give it some umpp. I then take my workpiece and pushed it up against the knife wall so as to cut my second knife wall. I scribe that line and do the same with the knife wall. Then I proceed to cut down in small increments into the knife wall on both sides. It’s going pretty well and I’ve got quite a lot of chips all over the living room – its funny how they get a life of their own when the are freed from the mother board. Then having seen the video from Woodworkingonline. that has a podcast on 10 essential tools, I used his trick of taking a saw to cut the knife wall down to your stop line. That works great. But you still have to chop out everything else. So anyway, I still have a long way to go on chisles.

Now back to the sharpening of only chsels at this point. I’ve been using two different methods to see which I like better. The scrary sharp method using sandpaper and oil stones. With eight method I can get a burr on the back of the blade, I take that off an then use the stroop. The guy in the video said to use something that I’m almost positive he called “roughe” can that be right.?Since my strop is just a leater pices glued to a board I’m may not be getting my efforts work. Stroop or not, my chisels are not all that sharp. And to do the simplist things I have to use my mallet.

I am trying to pick up as many pointers as I can n the forum. But do any of you have any books that you would recommend me to read on sharpening.

Rouge is a reddish polishing compound typically sold in a cardboard tube (it’s like a big tube of lipstick only firmer) or in bar form. Use it to charge one side of your strop, or on gouges you can cut the profile in a piece of hardwood and charge the board with rouge. This will allow you to polish off the wire edge. On scary sharp I usually skip this as the grits on the paper I use (P3000 Japanese wet/dry autobody paper) are fine enough to polish to mirror finish.

I will usually draw the chisel lightly across the edge on a piece of wood and it rolls off any edge.
