Browsing the internet I found this utility which recommends finishes to use based on a number of criteria which you can choose as properties. May give some an idea where to start and what questions to ask before picking a product. Give it a look: Wood Finish Selector.

From the same people there are other woodworking utilities which may be of interest. See them at WoodBin,

Hey, Paul, I routinely use the Shrinkulator and the Sagulator from Woodbin but wasn’t familiar with the “Finishulator” :) Thanks for posting!

I also use the Shrinkulator and the Sagulator learning of these from the LJ’s forums not that long ago. There is so much information which members such as you have passed along, and I personally learn something every time I read the forums. Fantastic wealth of knowledge here at LJ’s.

Thanks Art, for mentioning the Shrinkulator and the Sagulator for those that have not used them.
