Varnishing Hardwood Edging w/ a Laminate Top

I’m finish my new router table and I’m about to finish the hardwood edging around the top. The top is (2) 3/4” MDF sheets w/ laminate on the top. I’m using wipe on varnish and my question is this:

What do you all do to keep the varnish off of the top? My gut says to just mask it off and go to town but I was wondering if there were any other tricks around for this.

Chunk, I do what you suggested. I generally use blue painters tape and mask off the laminate.
